TONGUE publishes English translations of contemporary literary prose from any language.

Submission Guidelines

short stories, self-contained novel excerpts, creative non-fiction.

1,000–4,000 words.

submit one story, novel excerpt or a nonfiction piece.

submit only translations that have not been published previously, whether in print or online (this includes personal blogs, websites, and social media).

do not resubmit work, even if it has been revised, unless it has been requested by the editors.

we will not accept any work written or generated in part by AI.

simultaneous submissions are encouraged, but please email us immediately to withdraw your submission if it’s accepted for publication elsewhere.

submissions should include the original text and the translation.

all submissions should be sent as one Word document (.doc or .docx file), double spaced, 12 point Times New Roman font, 1 inch margins, with page numbers.

include the genre, story title, word count and all translator contact info on the first page of the submission.

cover letter should include brief 50-100 word bios of the author and translator, and information on the original publication.

translators are responsible for securing the rights with the author and/or publisher before submitting.

TONGUE acquires first publication rights and digital archival rights. Upon publication, all rights revert to the translator.

TONGUE pays its contributors for their work: authors and translators each receive $50-$200, depending on length, and two copies of their print issue.
